Modern day OFW

Few days ago i just posted for one of the OFW facebook page group and ask a question.

“Hanggang kailan ka magiging OFW?”

I got a lot of response from fellow OFW and most of them answer

“Hanggang kaya pa ng katawan”

“Hindi ko alam”

“Hanggat papalarin…”

This are the common feedback i got from them and im surprise how they sacrifice and trading their time for money. I admire our fellow kababayan that are working so hard to earn a living, giving the best life for for their family, but i never realize that they are willing to sacrifice their time until their able, until such time they can no longer work abroad. This is how unselfish our OFW thats why we call them the modern day hero they are the one of the reason that drives the Philippine economy.

During follow up question from them i ask “why they continue working abroad”? some told me that they left no choice cause no better opportunity at home and they need to earn for their childrens education, others they want to have their own house and lot and want to leave comfortably when time need to go back. The only sad truth is that despite many years of service in a foreign land it seems OFW need to work endlessly. Probobly they reach their goal at some point but why they need to work all over again? Do our kababayan are planning for their future? Very few OFW are getting successful in their journey abroad, and a lot are going home empty handed cause they never have the proper mindset and education how to handle their finances and family matters. That’s why most of the OFW leave without choice and trap with their own time.

The Right Time

Not all of our kababayan are thinking the same, some are waiting for the right time to go back home and be with their love ones and give the best life for them after years of sacrifice. These are the OFW that plan ahead planning to go back with a definite time frame because they know they have better in store for their family.

We know the fact that some day we will go back to our home country after years of service. Our hearts, mind and spirit are still belong to our home country, the only question is when we will be ready?

i think it is the right time to have a modern day OFW, equip with proper knowlege in personal finance, planning for their goal and someone ready to take challenge to be entrepreneur. Use their experience and knowledge to uplift their life and help others.

How to be modern day OFW?

As an OFW i have similar sentiments and challenges with our fellow kababayan. And to be a modern OFW

“it take a guts from once self to accept your weaknesses and open mind to be ready to accept change.”

I believe its not a responsibility of one entity to achieve this plan. It need cooperation from you, your family the community and the government to make it happened.

So what are the steps we need to take

1. We need to start from our selves. Set our minds and need to embrace change. We need to fill our minds with information how to educate our selves in terms of finances, motivation, and inspiration from others. Its important also to have a mentor to guide you thru the process.

2. Take planning. Asses aspect of your life that need to be develop, improved or change. Be open to critics or to other people who will tell you negative and positive comments. Choose a mentor that will define your values. Involved your family in your plan and your goal.

3. Make an action. It very important to take action. It will move you forward from your personal journey. What ever you learn from your mentors in aspect of finance, motivation and inspiration you apply

4. Be Decipline. Change will not happend over night and it will take time for you to achive your goal. It dosent matter how long it take to achieve it, the important is you continue to learn from your mistake. Join community or group that interest you, surround your self with people that will help you with your goal, this way you will progress further.

5. Pray. Guidance is always important it will make your journey at ease, blessed, and rewarding.

If you have comments about this topic feel free to write your thoughts and together we help our fellow kababayan in their own personal journey.

Your Journey Begins

I’m an OFW here in Singapore for many years now and through out my journey and Gods grace i was given an opportunity to restore my self from debt, live a comfortable life, prepare for our future and become a blessing to my family. Just like many other OFW that works abroad living outside our country is not a bed of roses its not a comfort zone a lot of adjustment and sacrifices to trade our time for money because we want to give the best life for our family. One thing i realize that life as an OFW here in Singapore, there are full of uncertainty in terms of job. We don’t know when our journey ends here because even the company likes you to stay, but don’t have enough quota for the company to provide you working visa, you will end up unprepared looking for another job or probably going back home.

Caught up Unprepared

Its a common thing for most of the foreigners here to be worried when their working visa expired or the company close due to bad business. Despite of many years of service or how good are you on your field of work or expertise there’s no exemption to the fact that you might loose your job, and this is a reality that we have to accept here. This type of senario will suddenly shift your plans 180 degrees. Sudden change will make you worry and anxiety will star to trigger…. How can i provide now for my family? How i can finance the house that i bought? What will happen to the education of my children? or may be how will i start all over again? If you caught unprepared most likely all your hardwork will be a mess and end up starting again from scratch. Most of our kababayan here in Singapore that are work pass holders including me are not exempted to this. We are all hoping and praying that the next renewal of our pass our names will not be picked on a raffle draw of uncertainties.

Plan to be prepared

We filipinos are know to be resilient from difficulty in life wether its calamity or life situation, we tend to bend and stand up again. This is something we are proud of and i could say very unique characteristic with other neighboring countries. But now the question is until when we will be resilient? Are we learning from this experience or are we keeping our self to be resilient as long as we can?

The reason why i ask this question is because i know majority of OFW know that chances of loosing jobs here in Singapore is high, but how come we dont take action, we don’t make a corrective plan to address transition and sudden lost of job. If the main reason why we work is money and your source of income is your job why we dont plan to work on your finances or invest in your self about seminar or workshop on how money to works for you.

Its a sad reality that despite being resilient we don’t adapt change and planning. We just keep moving in circle and repeating same pattern all over again.

Our kababayan here, they are tie up from their 8-6 job, some are extented to 12 hours per day living a rat race without savings. Some despite of being bless here with years of service they never invested for their selves to improve. Why only 1% of filipino population are into investing despite having a 10M of OFW working in different parts of the world? I understand… sometimes we need to learn it the hard way before we realise to take action and i my self I’ve been thru the same agony and realization.
